Today is the first day that I've felt like my normal self. Who knows what I had. Flu, cold, H1N172, I don't care what you call it; it was just pitiful.
So, when I woke up this morning and didn't feel like asking SH to shoot me in the head, I knew I was on the path to recovery. And what better way to recover than to start my first day of my green smoothie challenge? :)
Now, I'll be the first one to tell you that I'm not going to be able to do this like Sara really wanted us to. I can do the smoothies most mornings and I can stop drinking cokes (or pop if you're a Yank.) I will try my best to eat more greens, salads included but the whole no white sugar thing makes my head hurt. Yes, I know sugar is bad. Yes, I know it is one of the reasons I'm feeling so sluggish mid-day. But it's in bread, y'all! And I'm a bread addict. I can't help it. Baby steps.
I've decided not to set myself up for immediate failure and will begin trying to incorporate better things in my diet while leaving some of the bad stuff out. And I'll do it
My first smoothie this morning was not bad at all. It was quite yummy and I seriously drank the entire pitcher. But smoothies aren't too new for us...we've been drinking fruit ones for breakfast for a while now. The only difference is that instead of fat free milk, I'm using water and ice, and adding handfuls of spinach instead of this protein powder stuff that did nothing for me. (This morning, my fruits were strawberries, one banana, and some pineapple. Yummy!)
And now after reading this article, I of course want cuter straws. If you know me at all, you'll know that I drink pretty much everything through a straw. After buying a couple of hundred packs and going through them in a few months, I realized how irresponsible I was being. (We recycle of course, but I never knew what number those straws were so I always threw them away.)
So, I got a couple packs of those funny whistle straws. They work like a dream and are dishwasher safe. I keep them with my utensils so they are easily accessed. I've used them for about a year now and can't even fathom going back to the disposable kind. (I'm trying to get rid of all disposables in my house but that's another post.) I even bought a set for the trailer so I have no excuse not to use them when we're camping. Sure, it's a small step, but it adds up!
After looking around a bit, I came up a little disappointed. Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, BB&B didn't have sqaut. Grrr. I've seen the Oprah steel straws, but those don't look fun to me. They look quite serious, for straws. I saw these on etsy...still a little un-fun to me but you know how much I support hand made. Plus, they're made of glass, so that's another good thing. I'm thinking of getting these since they're glass and come in my fave shade! :)
Did anyone else start drinking the green smoothies? I know there were several people that wanted to start and I got some emails, too. If I didn't get back to you, I apologize. Blame H1N172.
Hope y'all are having amazing weeks so far! Happy to be back!
xoxo

Yeah, that whole "no sugar, no bread" thing is really a deal breaker for me. I recently started the Abs Diet, which is kind of similar in promoting eating whole foods and less processed things, but it's a little different. Whole grains are fine (obviously they aren't processed and icky), and you have one cheat meal per week. This, I can do. That way, if on Fridays I am craving some macaroni and cheese and some chocolate marshmallow ice cream, I can have it. Giving myself that short-term goal ("if I can make it 6 days, I can have something I really want") is super helpful to me. So far, in 2 1/2 weeks, I have lost 5 lbs. And I feel better, because I'm not constantly eating sugar. AND I'm always full, because you have to eat 6 times a day. Maybe you should look into that as a fellow carb lover. :-)
Wow the smoothie actually looked good, I love tomatoe juice and it definately revivies you and gives you nutrients your body looses during an illness.
Hope you feel much better tomorrow.
Blessings,
Heidi
Glad you are feeling better. I'm not a smoothie person. I don't drink shakes or malts either. It's a texture thing. The green smoothie - I don't think I could stomach it. The glass is nice though!
Yea, glad you are feeling better. And that's great you've started the smoothie challenge. I am planning to try a green smoothie this weekend so I can start the challenge myself next week. Good idea with the straws!
Good for you...I've been trying to get better at recycling and reducing my impact on the environment too!
P.S. I had to laugh at being called a "yank." I didn't know we were still referred to as that. And yes,I do call it "pop." :-)
Glad to hear that you are feeling better!
I just can't stay away from sugar period. Sweets are my number one weakness. During the summer these words came out of my mouth, "I'm going to cut myself off from sweets like I did cokes(I haven't had a coke in about three years! OR Sweet Tea, and being in the south that is one hard thing. Only water and milk for this gal! I'm proud of myself!) After those words sweets have taken me over! I'm going to go for healthier sweets, or smaller amounts, or just hiding them somewhere I won't ever think to look! :D
I started last Saturday. I have been feeling so bad since my last child was born. Just stuck in a rut with junk food and unable to lose the weight. So when I saw your post, I knew the green smoothies were just what I needed. My sweet hubbie went out & bought all the stuff for me. We love them! My daughter (who despises greens) loves them. It really has helped curb my sweet tooth! I just can't give up the white sugar yet though. It's holiday season!
Super cute blog!!
So glad you're feeling better!!
So glad to hear you are on the mend!! Have a lovely weekend! My eyes will be peeled for some fun straws, I need to make this change myself!!
YUM~ sounds healthy, indeed! :)
Many Blessings~ Miss Jen
i like my tea sweet...not kinda...SWEET, so i made a fruit smoothie per recipe with yogurt, but found ICE CREAM made it even better -- fattening, but sweet and smooth! LOL. okay. i feel guilty. i'm done. *wink*
It's nice you're feeling better. :) The drinks look so healthy. Good for you! About the sugar in bread - maybe you could make your own. Can you have honey? You can use honey instead or no sugar or sweetener at all. Just a suggestion.
God bless!

If you don't have to, the no bread thing is really hard. Its hard enough for me and it knocks me out! I found a bread (at Costco, but they have it at the grocery) that is high in fiber, no high frutose garbarge that is ok for me. The high fiber regulates the blood sugar I have read, so that's why. Each slice is 80 calories however, if you want the name, please email me.
I had yogurt for breakfast this morning, I'm likely going to have a green drink for dinner after my run tonight. I arrived to work at 5:45 so that I can leave at 4:00 to go running before it is too dark (yes, more than 8 hours, but I'm swampped and I build 'credit hours' to have days off, which is great!)
By the way, I mix a scoop of Spirulina in mine, just for recovery from the run. No sugar, 80 cals, and every nutrient you could need; then I add the fruit, spinach, etc! It helps me not be so exhausted. You can find it at Whole foods, Henrys, Sprouts, or probably one of the other heathly groceries in your area, or on line.
